The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) celebrates its 24th Founding Anniversary and Higher Education Week on May 15 until May 18, 2018 with the theme, “Access to Higher Education: Equalizing Opportunities, Building a Brighter Future.”
CHED was created on May 18, 1994 through the passage of Republic Act No. 7722 or the Higher Education Act of 1994 as a part of a broad agenda of reforms on the country’s education system outlined by the Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM) in 1992.
This year’s celebration coincides with the implementation of the Republic Act 10931 or the “Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act” (UAQTEA), which will take effect this coming academic year.
CHED Regional Offices across the country will also mount various activities to celebrate the agency’s creation.
Higher Education Exhibits
To kick-off the weeklong celebration, three major exhibits will be unveiled at the CHED Central Office to be led by the guest of honor, Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go, CHED Officer-in-Charge Prospero E. De Vera, III, CHED Officials and guests.
Representatives from public and private higher education institutions all over the country will showcase their latest innovations, projects and products at the “Higher Education Trade Fair” located at the Atrium.
Meanwhile, the CHED-Philippine-California Advanced Research Institutes (PCARI) Project and their partner institutions will mount the “HEI Innovation Exhibit” to promote projects jointly developed and implemented by Philippine-based HEIs and their counterpart research universities in California.
CHED’s International Affairs Staff, Embassy of Canada and Centennial College join forces to encourage internationalization among HEIs and provide college students details on various scholarships and other opportunities abroad at the “International Corner.”
Higher Education-related Fora
In the afternoon, CHED together with Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU), will hold a forum on “Global Trends in Community Colleges”. Davao City 1stDistrict Representative Karlo Alexei Nograles will deliver the keynote address in front of hundreds of representatives from local universities and colleges (LUCs), embassies and other foreign institutions.
On May 16, CHED’s Research and Extension Programs will take a center stage at the “1st CHED Research Brown Bag Policy Forum”. The event aims to strengthen research culture through a discussion on policies on research publication in the age of internationalization.
Gender Mainstreaming in Higher Education
As part of the Commission’s ongoing initiative to mainstream Gender and Development (GAD) in Higher Education, a series of GAD-related activities are scheduled on May 17 and 18. These include seminars and sessions on Law and Gender Injustice, Violence against Men, Basic Rights of LGBTQA+, and Self-defense for Women.
#FreeEducationNa Caravan in Region III
On May 18, the Unified Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST) will hold its 13th leg of the Nationwide Information Caravan on RA 10931 in Central Luzon.
The intensified information campaign on the landmark law aims to orient tertiary education stakeholders of Region III on the following programs: 1) Free Higher Education wherein the government will provide free tuition, miscellaneous and other similar or related fees to students admitted in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and CHED-recognized Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs); 2) Free Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for those enrolled in state-run Technical Vocational Institutions (TVIs); 3) Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) or grants-in-aid, and the 4) National Student Loan Program (SLP).
CHED gets physical
CHED employees will also have the chance to enjoy fun and relaxing activities. Aside from the annual Health and Wellness clinics, there will be a ceremony held in honor of the Commission’s Service Awardees and a variety show dubbed “CHED got Talent”. In addition, “CHEDans” are also gearing for this year’s Sports Fest featuring Basketball and Volleyball tournaments, and Fun Run at the academic oval of the University of the Philippines in Diliman.
